"Shipments of smartphones in the first quarter of 2010 grew to 54.7million units, a 56.7 percent increase over the first quarter of 2009,according to a report from market researcher IDC. That's more than double the rate of the overall mobile market, which grew 21.7 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2010.

"This comes after a 38 percent year-over-year jump in Q4 of 2009, which was impressive in and of itself.

"Like the semiconductor market that made a roaring come-back this quarter, the year-to-year growth can be attributed to the fact that the first quarter of 2009 was marked by a deep recession in which consumer spending screeched to a halt, and now the economy is in recovery.

"While hot sellers in developer economies such as the U.S., smartphones are still a minority platform in the global picture and only accounted for 18.8 percent of all mobile phones shipped in the quarter. Still, IDC sees "tremendous potential of the market" for further growth."
