The GIMP's default layout is not very good and for the most part, people will most likely come from using Adobe Photoshop, like I did many years ago.

The reality is, that there are a lot of Adobe Photoshop users out there, whether that be professional or amateur. Adobe Photoshop's layout is generally a good default anyway, maximising workspace space and accessible. The GIMP 2.8 will have a single window interface but for now, we're stuck with the utility panels, which show up as separate windows but can be minimised as one in version 2.6.

Here is a YouTube video I specifically made to show people how to set-up The GIMP, similar to that of Photoshop's default layout.
