KDE SC 4.5 Falls Short

(Other stories by Jeremy LaCroix)

"Last week, I finally had a chance to check out KDE SC 4.5.0. I've used it before with the official Live CD, however there was a delay with my distribution (Arch) receiving this release due to some packaging issues, so I'm taking a look at it a bit late. The verdict? KDE 4.5 had promise, but a lack of new features and the introduction of brand new regressions keep it from perfection.

"My review comes a bit late, as KDE 4.5 is the first KDE release I haven't beta tested in several years. I recently switched from Kubuntu to Arch, and while I haven't regretted my decision, I remember that new KDE releases (even the betas) were easier to get in Kubuntu. With Arch, I'd have to either wait, or enable the testing repository, which was something I didn't want to do.

"Thankfully, I've finally received the update to KDE 4.5. From what I can see, the innovation within the KDE4 series has slowed down quite a bit, as the desktop gets more and more stabilized and the features that were once revolutionary when the desktop first appeared are ironed out and finalized."
