"Every so often I stray from the default Gnome desktop to see what else my Linux machine is capable of. And withing a day or two I usually switch back. So is the latest release of KDE good enough to earn a permanent place on my desktop?

"I recently moved from a standard mobile phone to an Android based smartphone. Originally I though the idea of having the internet on a phone was kind of pointless, but now I find myself flipping through a handful of widgets on my phone on an almost hourly basis. "I think operating systems are also seeing the light by moving away from a desktop that does nothing more than display a wallpaper and a bunch of icons. KDE 4 lead the pack by making the entire desktop a container for widgets, known as plasmoids, although projects like Unity and Gnome 3 are also moving away from the "icon bucket" paradigm."
