"Smart TV functionality is becoming an increasingly important
trend as hardware manufacturers seek to differentiate their
television sets. Some of the popular software suites that have
traditionally been used on home theater PCs, such as Boxee and
Plex, are making their way onto set-top boxes and televisions.
Plex, for example, is licensed by LG and ships on some of the

appealing to some hardware manufacturers that don't yet have their
own embedded smart television software yet. If Ubuntu TV becomes
popular, Canonical could profit by tying in its own video rental
service or selling commercial licenses to hardware vendors who want
the code under more permissive terms.
