"Companies that bet on Linux for business-critical
applications should expect many of the same service issues that
affect orthodox enterprise applications. Although the
robustness of the open source operating system minimises some
problems, Linux will eventually face the same lack of skilled
support that other systems face today, according to new research by
Gartner's Dataquest division."
"The pool of people willing to be employed as customer support
personnel has limits even in the Linux world," wrote author Tony
Adams in the report, Addressing the issues of Linux support."
"Adams also argues that Linux today cannot compete with
established proprietary and Unix offerings in terms of service
levels, and says that Linux remains predominantly aimed at a
developer audience."
