Rebel.com, an Ottawa-based hardware and software vendor, announced that 35 employees have been laid off, according to this report in the National Post. Most of these positions are related to the sales and marketing of the NetWinder, a Linux-based server appliance.
Rebel.com bought the NetWinder line from Corel Corp., which holds a minority interest in the firm.
The layoffs came after a direct-sales campaign for the NetWinder failed. The company will now be restructured into two divisions: a software division (that has traditionally been profitable) and a hardware division. A rumor cited by the National Post was that IBM would invest in the firm.
