AP: Microsoft Rules Out Settlement

Contrary to what was reported yesterday, it doesn't appear that Microsoft is terribly interested in a settlement -- leading at least one state attorney general to call for a breakup of the software giant.

"Microsoft Corp. ruled out an antitrust settlement that would change its structure, putting the software giant on a collision course with the states that sued it and want a breakup to remain a possible penalty...."

"Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal rejected the company's stance, saying he would like to consider a wide range of penalties."

"'The remedies have to be effective in restoring competition and preventing recurrence of illegality,' Blumenthal said, adding, 'It might well be that only a structural remedy would fit that criteria.'"
