"In 2000, according to cost management index calculations, [Red Hat] was shelling out $1.30 in operating costs for every dollar of revenue it was generating. By 2002, the firm was spending 96 cents for every dollar of revenue...

"But among the company's cost-saving efforts last year was a policy of cutting loose unprofitable acquisitions including Reston, Va.-based Akopia Inc., Atlanta-based Planning Technologies Inc. (ENS unit), Pittsburgh-based Hell's Kitchen Systems and Bluecurve Inc.

"Those moves cut roughly 160 from the Red Hat employee roster, which nowadays stands at 635, according to Yahoo Finance..."
