"Linux fans cheered a leaked memo from IBM Corp. executive Bob Greenberg this month that challenged workers to replace their Windows PCs with the upstart operating system over the next two years.

"It would indeed seem a big step forward for Linux, which has become a hit on servers but remains a distant underdog on standard desktop PCs.
