"An enterprise looking for the best Linux distro encounters a blizzard of terminology and few standard guidelines, other than those provided by the vendors themselves. Approach Red Hat, SuSE, Debian or Mandrake, and proponents of each will tout its advantages.

"Part of this difficulty is due to the fact that not that many years ago, enterprises did not shop for Linux distributions. The data center was powered by Unix or another proprietary OS, and Windows was the automatic desktop choice.

"But Linux--having gained a reputation as a corporate cost cutter--is now the emerging contender. This makes the shopping question more pressing: Which Linux distro is best for the enterprise...?"
