"In order to promote innovation, we need to set up new 'open
source' models and solutions and projects that are aimed at
developing specific solutions for SMEs in Italy and the Public
Administration.
"These projects, as surveys by the Observatory Digital Cities
(OCID), Rur and Censis reveal, indicate that the public
administration can act as a driving force, by experimenting with
and adopting innovative solutions. The 'open source' projects,
Censis explains, can represent an opportunity to reduce the amount
of money spent on software licences, but also to develop skills and
the capacity to give Italian companies vitality.
"In the provincial capitals for example, with regard to web
servers, Microsoft' share is 45.6 pct compared with an open source
share of 42.7 pct..."
