IT Manager's Journal: Why Openwave is Getting Deep into Linux

"Today's column is based on a recent interview with Openwave's Liz Glasser, who oversees Openwave's Linux program with business partner MontaVista.

"Wireless voice and data is in the early stages of what should be -- over the next decade -- a substantial global revenue opportunity. Numerous players continue to emerge in the various segments of the wireless space, including applications, development environments, network operators, operating systems, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), protocols, and transport mechanisms. A number of companies are poised to capture early share in each segment, leading to a flurry of activity particularly in the operating systems segment. Contrary to the predominant market view, however, I believe it could be two to three years before operating systems are capable of providing seamless, reliable wireless delivery of voice and data and interactivity with packet-switched networks..."
