"The software industry may well be heading for a radical
realignment, but it is still too early for the end-game to begin
according to most industry analysts and bankers after the surprise
news that Microsoft and SAP had until recently been discussing a
merger.
"No terms were proposed and no outside financial advisers were
involved in the talks, according to one person familiar with the
discussions. But the mere fact that the biggest US and European
software companies even entertained the idea--and were willing to
contemplate the huge regulatory and cultural obstacles such a deal
would have entailed--points to how compelling they thought a
combination might be..."
