The great irony of Linux desktops in Australia

"If you go back five years, there was a great deal of hype about the potential for large Australian organizations to deploy Linux on their desktop PCs.

"The NSW Government had stipulated in its whole of government desktop PC purchasing contract that the machines must be able to run Windows and Linux, and senior Telstra executives had talked openly about using open source software as a replacement for Microsoft technology.

"At that stage, Linux vendors like Red Hat and (later on) Novell were also pushing strongly into the Australian marketplace. There was a sense that Australia was on the verge of seeing a large Linux desktop deployment that would become the catalyst for other major rollouts of the technology.

"The problem is, that desktop rollout never happened."
