"As developing countries like China upgrade older mainframe systems, Mr. Whitehurst says, open-source software is poised to grow rapidly. In moving to Red Hat, Mr. Whitehurst was returning to his computer-science roots—it was one of his college majors—after careers in consulting and airline management. For the quarter ended May 31, the North Carolina company posted a profit of $32.5 million, on revenue of $264.7 million.
