systems, Mr. Whitehurst says, open-source software is poised to
grow rapidly. The advent of cloud computing—in which data and
applications are stored remotely and accessed over the Internet,
potentially making collaboration simpler—is another potential
open-source opportunity.
In moving to Red Hat, Mr. Whitehurst was returning to his
computer-science roots—it was one of his college
majors—after careers in consulting and airline management.
For the quarter ended May 31, the North Carolina company posted a
profit of $32.5 million, on revenue of $264.7 million.
