Open publishing accounts for a relatively small proportion of scholarly publishing, though its impact is growing and affecting the commercial publishing models. As the recent protest against Elsevier shows, researchers are no longer happy with the exploitation, restricted access and exorbitant prices charged by corporate publishers.
