"The state government is adopting the open source system software to speed up the development of a knowledge-based society in Sarawak.

"Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said there were two economic reasons for adopting the open source system as an alternative to the proprietary system in the state’s information and communication technology agenda.

"'Its low cost and free distribution means that more people can afford ICT and this can help expand and extend the usage of ICT within the state and stimulate the development of the local ICT industry...'"
