News Linux News for Aug 03, 2008:

  • Break Bad UNIX Habits With 10 Good Ones
    (2008-08-03 02:00:02)
IBM Developerworks: "This article takes you step-by-step through several good, but too often neglected, techniques for command-line operations. Learn about common errors and how to overcome them, so you can learn exactly why these UNIX habits are worth picking up."
An oldie but a goodie -- ed.

  • When Software Protection is Good For FOSS
    (2008-08-03 06:00:02)
Raiden's Realm: "Ultimately the only way to get them to change would be to make it so painful for them to stay, that it's preferable to go to another program and learn it instead, rather than stay and suffer. That's where DRM, activation, software keys, and other anti-consumer technologies are very much the friend of FOSS."

  • Use XStream to Serialize Java Objects Into XML
    (2008-08-03 10:00:02)
IBM Developerworks: "Using XStream, you can serialize most Java objects without any mapping. Object names become element names in the XML produced, and the strings within classes form the element content of the XML. The classes that you serialize with XStream don't need to implement the Serializable interface. XStream is a serialization tool and not a data binding tool, which means that it doesn't perform class generation from an XML or XML Schema Definition (XSD) file."

  • Ultamatix May be a Worthy Successor to Automatix For New Ubuntu and Debian Users
    (2008-08-03 14:00:02)
Linux.com: "Some Ubuntu fans out there may remember Automatix, a tool for Ubuntu that allowed easy access to many popular non-free applications and commonly-used audio and video codecs. It debuted a few years ago, and got negative reviews from Ubuntu developers and experienced users due to the risk of breaking dependencies... Now Ultamatix hopes to continue where Automatix left off."

  • Bruce Perens: Microsoft and Apache - What's the Angle?
    (2008-08-03 18:00:02)
Datamation: "For a decade, Microsoft was open source's worst enemy, combating it at every turn. But last week Microsoft joined the Apache open source project as a platinum sponsor...Has Redmond given up the fight? Or is this just their latest strategy?"

  • Absolute Nonsense - More Weekend Unix and Linux Levity
    (2008-08-03 20:00:02)
The Linux and Unix Menagerie: "Another week has past and it's time to laugh heartily before it all ends in tears ;) This week, I stumbled upon Two sites that had me working overtime trying not to laugh out loud at my desk. Nonsense humor isn't for everyone, but I find it the most enjoyable kind. It's goofy, it's random and once something gets me going I sound like I'm having a massive asthma attack while I'm trying to force myself to not laugh."

  • Humor And Disaster - The Chicken Crossing The Road
    (2008-08-03 20:30:02)
The Linux and Unix Menagerie: "I'll leave you with some more funny stuff I found at this Unix Humor site. Some of it's a bit dated, but funny nonetheless. I'm putting the "chicken crossed the road" joke out here, but you should definitely check out this site for a whole lot of other funnies that, at the very least, the site owner deserves recognition for putting all in one place :)"h

  • First Openmoko Custom Phone Now Available and Wears a Debian Plaid Kilt
    (2008-08-03 22:00:02)
Wired: "Oh yeah, it also comes in an ugly batch of colors, including a tartan-weave plaid case that spells out 'Debian' in Morse Code."
