News Linux News for Jan 11, 2009:

  • Linux and Sun events chopped as recession bites
    (2009-01-11 02:03:55)
The Register: "It may be a popular Linux distro, but that's not enough to tempt fans of Ubuntu into traveling to the American northwest to get the latest low down."

  • Palm unveils Linux "Pre" smartphone
    (2009-01-11 06:03:55)
LinuxDevices: "Palm announced its WebOS Linux platform yesterday, along with a smartphone to run it. To be sold by Sprint in the first half of 2009, the 3G-enabled Palm Pre features a slide-out keyboard, WiFi, GPS, 3-megapixel camera, 3.1-inch touchscreen, and Palm's homegrown "WebOS" Linux phone stack."

  • Hardening the Linux server
    (2009-01-11 14:03:55)
IBM Developerworks: "Servers--whether used for testing or production--are primary targets for attackers. By taking the proper steps, you can turn a vulnerable box into a hardened server and help thwart outside attackers. Learn how to secure SSH sessions, configure firewall rules, and set up intrusion detection to alert you to any possible attacks on your GNU/Linux server."

    (2009-01-11 18:03:55)
Linux Developer Network: "So the new Palm platform cat has been let out of the bag although, for the moment, developers must look but not touch. All Palm will say for now is that you can build your apps with JavaScript, HTML and CSS, not much help if you're looking to build an app for their new WebOS any time soon"

  • Why Linux is superior to windows for non-techies
    (2009-01-11 22:03:55)
Linux Start: "I believe the complexity perceived by lots of people as keeping non technical people from using Linux is based on a misconception."
