CRN: Boeing Reviews Linux With Mixed Results Apr 29, 2000, 16 :32 UTC (9 Talkback[s]) (5248 reads) (Other stories by Edward F. Moltzen)
"The company returned a split verdict on Linux following the top-to-bottom review, while
continuing to work with IBM Global Services for integration and Microsoft Corp. and its
partners for other support, said Boeing executives.
"We are evaluating Linux as a potential operating system for use within Boeing," said
Beverly Clark, a communications manager at the company's IT unit."
"The several-months-long study evaluated the open-source platform and considered its
potential deployment throughout the Fortune 500 company, said Clark. "The conclusion
was that it was a promising operating system [that] could be used with niche
applications," she said. "It was not ready for use as a widespread [operating system]
within Boeing."
"A recent CRN survey found, however, that solution providers on the whole were
warming up to offering Linux-based solutions. In fact, according to the survey, 38
percent of solution providers said they preferred rolling out Linux-based solutions
compared with 43 percent of those who preferred Microsoft Windows-based solutions."
