:Raph Levien: An open letter to the Ghostscript development community
Raph Levien: An open letter to the Ghostscript development community

(Other stories by Raph Levien)

"As most of you probably know by now, I am taking on the maintainership of Ghostscript from L. Peter Deutsch. I am very grateful to Peter for creating such a useful, high quality tool, and humbly hope to maintain the high standards he has set."

"Ghostscript is a very mature piece of software. At the same time, I believe it has the potential to be one of the most exciting and dynamic projects out there. There is a lot of work to be done, especially closer integration with other projects. Ghostscript is currently an essential component of printing and imaging on Unix, and I think it can grow even more into that role as both documents and user interfaces become more graphically intense...."

"We plan a 6.50 intermediate release of Ghostscript very soon. This release primarily contains a raft of bug fixes over 6.01 and many more operations handled at a high level in the pdf writer."

"The next major release is scheduled for the first quarter of next year. Development priorities include imaging (support for PDF 1.4 transparency and blending, interpretation of ICC color profiles, and DeviceN and Separation color spaces), and dynamically loaded drivers."

"Between Artifex and myself, we have the resources to implement these features for the 7.0 release. There is another class of features I'd love to see in 7.0, but it will only happen with development and support from the community. To me, the most interesting among these is a GUI so that Ghostscript becomes a viable competitor to Adobe Acrobat Reader. More about this below."
