AMD, IBM Announce Port of DB2 to x86-64 Platform

Just days after Linus Torvalds publicly mentioned his hope that AMD's x86-64 processor architecture would win out over Intel's Itanium IA-64 design, news comes from AMD, IBM, and SuSE Linux of a big tier-one move in the Linux enterprise arena.

According to an announcement made early this afternoon, IBM's DB2 database software will be enabled for the new AMD Opteron 64-bit processors. The implementation, which took just two days to be sucessfully enabled on the x86-64 chip, will run on the SuSE Linux operating system.

This announcement comes on the heels of Torvald's Usenet comments Sunday on the x86-64 architecture. If Opteron succeeds in the marketplace, Torvalds hopes that Intel will abandon the Itanium path and actively pursue its Yamhill technology, which will be a better platform than Itanium on which to develop the Linux kernel.

A move by IBM and AMD to port DB2 version 8 to AMD's x86-64 (Hammer) technology is certainly a move in the right direction for getting that market success. Kevin Graf, the Server/Workstation Team Manager for AMD, emphasized that today's announcement is just one part of "AMD's push to provide small, mid, and enterprise-level customers

DB2 v8's common client interface architecture allows existing 32-bit, x86-based applications with direct access to DB2's 64-bit database environment, according to the press statement released today. AMD stipulates that this will allow enterprise customers to optimize their 32-bit apps while fostering a better migration to a 64-bit environment.

This ease-of-migration is something that AMD is heavily emphasizing, as it moves to position itself away from Intel's Itanium and Xeon processor lines. The fact that the actual port of DB2 to the x86-64 processor only took two days is a testament, Graf said, of how customers' needs could easily be met by moving to the 64-bit architecture. Graf credited the processor's open architecture for the porting ease, a design that has often found favor with many Linux kernel developers.

IBM and AMD are planning to demonstrate DB2 for Linux on the Opteron processor at LinuxWorld Expo San Francisco on August 13-15.
