Internet Week: Sun-3Com Deal Signals Palm Platform Race

Jun 28, 1999, 01:41 (6 Talkback[s])

"My last column on Linux has elicited 550 e-mails as of this writing, the majority of their writers angry. I admit that I did not properly differentiate between the Linux kernel and specific Linux distributions."

"I think Linux is too open. I would be thrilled if the Linux kernel came with an LDAP directory service and forced all applications to use the security and configurations stored in that directory. What I like about the Windows NT world is that these services are integrated with one another today. Okay, it's not the best implementation, but it is a step in the right direction.

"Give me a Linux with the application integration capabilities of NT without having to recompile to get SMP, and which is ready out of the box, and I will be more than happy to use it. Having hundreds of discreet distributions for Linux is too cumbersome."

Complete story.
