TurboLinux Security Announcement
Package: netscape-4.73 and earlier
Date: Wednesday August 2 12:00 PDT 2000
Affected TurboLinux versions: 6.0.5 and earlier
Vulnerability Type: malicious remote website exploit possible
TurboLinux Advisory ID#: TLSA2000017-1
Credits: netscape.ad-1.00-07
A security hole was discovered in the package mentioned above. Please update the package in your installation as soon as possible or disable the service. 1. Problem Summary Current and previous versions of netscape communicator have a buffer overflow condition in its handling of JPEG files. Specifically, it trusts the purported length of JPEG files provided by the header and can be mislead into reading arbitrary amounts of data, leading to the overwriting of memory. 2. Impact A web site could contain malicious code which would enable remote execution or other malicious behavior as the user of netscape on the client's machine. 3. Solution Please upgrade your packages to match the new revision Update the packages from our ftp server by running the following command: rpm -Fv ftp_path_to_filename Where ftp_path_to_filename is the following: The source RPM can be downloaded here: **Note: You must rebuild and install the RPM if you choose to download and install the SRPM. Simply installing the SRPM alone WILL NOT CLOSE THE SECURITY HOLE. Please verify the MD5 checksum of the update before you install: MD5 sum Package Name 940ec5bccc73166938e1b75cb384de19 netscape-communicator-4.74-2.i386.rpm dcc0a1890e0123efd3cd86efbc276942 netscape-communicator-4.74-2.src.rpm These packages are GPG signed by Turbolinux for security. Our
key is available here: To verify a package, use the following command: rpm --checksig name_of_rpm To examine only the md5sum, use the following command: rpm --checksig --nogpg name_of_rpm **Note: Checking GPG keys requires RPM 3.0 or higher.
