NYTimes: Irregular New Accounts Alerted Microsoft to Network Intruder

"On Friday, the rest of the world found out that Microsoft had been the victim of a break-in. But yesterday the company said that contrary to earlier reports and information it had provided, the episode did not span six weeks, but only a week."

"In providing the fullest account to date of the episode, Microsoft said it hoped to correct impressions that its internal security was lax or that its products had been compromised...."

"But in describing one possible chain of events, which corresponds to previous reports of the incident, they said the attacker did not directly enter Microsoft's computer networks. Instead, the point of entry was an employee's home machine, connected to the company's network."
