"The economic recovery has yet to make its presence felt at many IT departments. Even within tight budget constraints, savvy admins are able to layer their defenses by turning to open source and freeware utilities that offer much of the same functionality as full-blown suites from big vendors.

"Cost benefits aside, such software is a relatively risk-free way of experimenting with various setups, enabling administrators and all those with an interest in network security to customize their defenses without racking up the bills.

"Naturally, there is a catch. Many of the tools don't sport fancy GUIs and customer support is oftentimes nonexistent. However, any PC enthusiast worth his/her salt knows how to resolve problems that may crop up (web searches, dedicated forums, newsgroups...)"
