When computers were first developed there was no such thing as an operating system. Programs were written, shoved into the computers guts and that was all the computer ran. Access to hardware devices was handled within the program itself and the idea of a kernel was something you popped before watching a movie. As computers became more versatile in their abilities it became apparent that they could handle more than one task at a time. For that to happen however there had to be a means of regulating different collections of bits, nibbles and bytes to ensure they had relatively equal access to the CPU and hardware devices.
