“Do you have XFree86 version 4 running on your computer but
haven’t gotten it working just the way you want it? Maybe there are
some features you would like to take advantage of, but don’t know
how. Or maybe you’d just like something more to experiment with. If
you still can’t even get a graphical screen, or the resolution
isn’t high enough for you, then you should seek information on a
setup program called xf86config or XF86Setup. But if you need some
configuration beyond that, then this article is for you.

“Before you begin making any configuration changes, you should
have version 4.x of XFree86 running. To check what version you
have, type this command in a terminal window:

XFree86 -version

“If the version number starts with a 4, then you’re ready to
tackle some of the configuration changes we’ll show you. If you
have another version number (3.x for example), then some of these
features may be present in your version but you may have to go
about configuring them in a different manner. This article assumes
you have a standard single monitor setup. If you have a dual
monitor setup, then you may have to check the man page for
XF86Config…”
