"Cygnus Solutions, the leader in open-source software, announced an agreement with IBM to provide Cygnus GNUPro software development tools optimized for the AIX operating system and for Project Monterey on the IA-64 platform. Project Monterey is a major UNIX operating system initiative to create a version of UNIX for both RISC and Intel platforms. This agreement makes Cygnus' industry leading, open-source based tools available to software engineers developing commercial applications on all major UNIX-based operating systems, including IBM's AIX, Project Monterey on IA-64, Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX, and Sun's Solaris, as well as Linux."

"Today's software developers require development tools that allow them to deliver compelling applications on a broad range of platforms. Cygnus GNUPro offers the most viable multi-platform software development environment in the industry. Featuring a complete software development toolsuite for C and C++ programmers, GNUPro enables developers to preserve, and easily recompile, program source code for execution across a broad range of hosts and processor architectures. By making the Cygnus GNUPro Toolkit available on AIX, software developers can create applications today on an RS/6000 that will be ready for Project Monterey on IA-64 as soon as it becomes available."

"Monterey is well on its way to becoming the volume, standard, enterprise-class UNIX operating system," said Rajiv Samant, general manager, UNIX, IBM Corporation. "With the availability of Cygnus's GNUPro Toolkit, the attractiveness of Monterey to the developer community is significantly enhanced."
