"The NC2, due to ship early next year, will run the Linux operating system bundled with Sun Microsystems' StarOffice desktop productivity suite. It also will include an integrated CD-ROM, which will store the machine's operating system and browser. It will also come with both an Ethernet connection and a 56K modem. Oracle's original NC booted off a network, while the new NC2 will boot locally...."

"Meanwhile, the complexity of managing Windows is leaving Jay Higgason, a database administrator at W.M. Wrigley Jr. Co., open to some kind of thin client."

"The biggest challenge we face is trying to manage the workstations," said Higgason. "Sometimes an upgrade works on one Windows machine and not on another." The venerable maker of gum and other products is now developing its new applications to use Web browser clients and Java-based servers."
