"Enlightenment, often referred to as E, is a highly customizable window manager for X Windows. In fact, Enlightenment, in both philosophy of the developers and in the product itself, is one of the most configurable window managers available. Both look and feel can be adjusted to fit your own tastes."

"One of the popular myths about Enlightenment is that it is slow due to the many graphic customizations available. This is not true. When used with older processors and less memory, E still performs well when not used on top of GNOME or KDE. This is where the "Enlightenment is slow" myth comes from. When used on top of GNOME or KDE on older systems, Enlightenment will be considerably slower than when used by itself."

"Which brings us to E compatibility with GNOME and KDE. Enlightenment has built in support for the GNOME and KDE desktop environments with version 0.16. This means that you can run GNOME and KDE applications as well as the taskbars and file managers native to both environments under Enlightenment. By default, KDE support is turned off however, so be sure to turn this on and restart E if you want to use it on top of KDE. (To do this enter eesh -e 'kde on' at the command prompt.)"
