"Nelson Rush...is leader of the QuakeForge Project, whose goals are to extend Quake 1 (and any future releases by Id Software) into a whole new realm of virtual gaming and virtual reality, while maintaining a backwards compatibility layer with the original Quake and other Quake projects...."

"Linux.com: What are QuakeForge's main goals?"

"Nelson Rush: To boldly go where no hacker has gone before, and remain backwards compatible while doing it. We plan to extend Quake as an engine, and any future Id Quake releases. We also plan to keep a compatibility layer, so that we remain compatible with other projects and original Quake."

"A few new goals that have arrived are integration of Aftershock, a newly released Q3A rendering engine (no gameplay), with q1 source. Other goals inclue fixing the cheating problem, Re-wiring multiplayer, and redesigning a lot of the visuals. We also want to integrate autoconf/automake for better portability and maintainence."
