PC Week: VMware updates software for running multiple OSes

"VMware 2.0 provides a "fully functional PC in a window" running on a host PC -- otherwise known as a virtual machine -- according to officials with the Palo Alto, Calif., company. The platform is built for Windows 2000, Windows NT and Linux.?

"It's a software-based PC within a standard PC," said David Michaud, vice president of marketing for VMware. "You can run multiple operating systems simultaneously [and] toggle between operating systems ... as guest applications...."

"According to Michaud, the VMware platform provides BIOS, memory, networking capability, dial-up access, file-sharing support and sound; new features in VMware 2.0 include improved performance, instant restoration of suspended virtual machine sessions and SCSI disk support."
