IBM this week released an early version of a Linux software development kit, which it said will help promote the use of Java on Linux in enterprise applications.

The IBM Developer Kit for Linux, Java 2 Technology Edition, version 1.3.0 can be used to build and run Java applications.

The kit includes development tools, the IBM Java Runtime Environment for Linux, sample code and Java source files. It also features IBM's latest technology for Java performance, scalability and stability with the most recent Java 2 specification, version 1.3.

Jon Collins, a senior analyst at Bloor Research, said the kit would help Java and Linux to "scale up the application tree".

"This will promote the evolution on Java on Linux from use on web servers to application servers," said Collins, who added that IBM is underlining its commitment to both Linux and Java.
