Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

[ Thanks to Kevin Reichard for this link. ]

"It wasn't too long ago that mentioning Linux and handhelds at the same time was an invitation for eye-rolling and accusations of not knowing when to be practical. The more humorless would point at the project to port Linux to the Palm platform and say, "It's too underpowered! How can Linux be worth anything crammed into that!?."

"In the last year, though, it's become clear that handheld computing is nothing to make fun of. Handheld organizers like the Palm, Handspring, and a wide variety of Windows CE/Pocket PC machines have proven there are billions of dollars to be made in putting the power to organize, remember, communicate, and even play into something that fits into a shirt pocket."

"We're also once again invited to consider the creativity and ingenuity of the Free Software community when confronted with an interesting challenge: the indications are that Linux will soon be just about everywhere, and even its most ardent fans will have a hard time recognizing it, because "Linux on a handheld" doesn't have to mean "struggling with a command line interface using Graffiti" or "running FVWM2 on a repurposed WinCE machine."
