"SpeechWorks International has announced the Open Speech Web, an interconnected speech services network to enable 'speech-surfing' Internet access and connections to speech-enabled applications with spoken commands over a telephone."

"SpeechWorks officials say the company has two products, currently in beta, slated for release to Open Source developers. Source code for the Speech Browser and SpeechLinks is slated for preview later this month, says SpeechWorks spokesperson Steve Chambers."

"SpeechLinks and the SpeechWorks Speech Browser will be distributed as Open Source software to all interested developers including other speech software companies," Chambers says. "Both SpeechLinks and Speech Browser are currently in beta test at a limited number of partners and customers. The SpeechLink 1.0 specification will be available for review at SpeechWorks' Web site on July 15. SpeechLinks' product code is expected to be available via web download in third quarter, and Speech Browser in the fourth quarter, 2000."
