I come to you with a story of man trying to install Linux on a laptop. (Namely me, your loyal moderator/editor-in-chief). I knew from the moment I started, that it could be difficult. Most laptops are riddled with Window$-only hardware, and I knew the Toshiba 2655XDVD that I was dealing with was going to be no exepction.

Quickly, here are the specs on the subject:

Toshiba 2655XDVD
14.1 Inch TFT screen
Trident Cyber 9525 PCI/AGP video card with 2.5 Mb
Xircom RE-100 Ethernet (Not officially supported)
Winmodem (Arrggh)
6 Gig HD
128 MB RAM

It seemed simple enough, and I had several distributions on hand so I thought I'd "have a lash" as Crocodile Dundee would say.
