"TurboLinux, Inc., the high-performance Linux company, today announced availability of the fifth upgrade of its IA-64 Linux distribution that includes the world's first IA-64 port of Helixcode's GNOME desktop and other enhancements to optimize performance on Intel Itanium processor-based server and workstation systems. TurboLinux, which was the first company to make a complete IA-64 Linux distribution available to developers last March, code named its most recent release "Firecracker" and includes the Helix Code GNOME desktop, the 2.4..0-test1 + 0621 patch kernel for Linux, updated kernel RPMs, Netscape installation by default, early support for kernel modules and popular developer programs such as gnapster and xmms."
"At Helix Code we are committed to deploying our desktop onto every possible computer, and we go to extreme lengths to make Helix GNOME as portable and universal as possible," said Helix Code co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Miguel de Icaza. "TurboLinux's choice of Helix GNOME as their desktop means that they recognize the quality of our product and our on-going work. And our partnership with them means that we can work together to bring Linux to the newest workstations, including those using the IA64 architecture."
"TurboLinux has taken a leadership role in optimizing Linux for Intel's forthcoming IA-64 platform," said Ly Pham, executive vice president of worldwide development for TurboLinux. "We're pleased to also be the first to make Helix Code's GNOME desktop available to our growing ranks of independent software vendors porting their applications to Linux for IA-64."
