OpenOffice.org: Hackers Guide to Participating in OpenOffice.orgOct 19, 2000, 16:17 (0 Talkback[s])
"What you should know about participating and contributing."
"The product will be known as OpenOffice, and will be hosted on openoffice.org. Sun will release the StarOffice source code on October 13 under an Open Source license, via CVS. Why 10/18? It crucial for that first code drop to be compilable and runnable, and it's not right now. The Oct date should allow enough time to accomplish this. Further, they're isolating dependencies between apps and modules to allow people to grok the code in sections, instead of the monolithic structure that now exists."
"Sun's use of Collab.net's community development services illustrates their understanding that OSS is more than just a license, it's about growing a community. Without that community, the openoffice effort will fail. In clear understanding of this, Sun is using the tools and expertise of Collab.Net to help found, nurture, and grow openoffice into a thriving, active community. But we need YOU! This brand-new community, and therefore the success of this project, starts and ends with your involvement and participation. Forgive the cliche, but we really can't do it without you!"
