Ximian has announced the release of Ximian GNOME 1.4 and Red Carpet 1.0.

GNOME 1.4 was released as source code three weeks ago. Ximian's business is centered around enhancing the GNOME desktop both by providing some additional polish to the existing environment as provided by the GNOME project and providing additional applications such as Evolution, a GUI mail/calendaring/contact management client; and Red Carpet, a software installation and package management tool.

According to the company, the major features of the new Ximian release include:

  • tight integration of the Red Carpet package manager for upgrade and installation management
  • the Mozilla browser
  • the Nautilus file manager
  • "MonkeyTalk," a feature that integrates live chat support as a Help option in Ximian packages
  • GNOME Doorman, a wizard-like app designed to help users install Ximian GNOME on their computers

Download information is available from the Ximian download page. The current list of supported distributions includes:

  • Red Hat Linux 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.0, and 7.1
  • SuSE 6.3, 6.4 and 7.0 on x86
  • Mandrake 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2
  • Debian GNU/Linux (Potato) on x86
  • LinuxPPC 2000
  • TurboLinux 6.0
  • Yellow Dog Linux Champion Server 1.2

At the moment, Debian GNU/Linux (Woody) is unsupported, though the company says it plans to have support shortly. SuSE 7.1, Mandrake 8.0, Solaris 7 & 8 on UltraSparc are also forthcoming.

Installation options include either the go-gnome installer or manual installation of an installer script.
