The VCR-HOWTO document has been updated to include instructions on creating VCD's! A VCD can be played on virtually any DVD player, so you can record your favorite programs under GNU/Linux and play it on your TV.

I also added information about the latest version of vcr (1.07), which allows encoding the audio portion in mp3 instead of raw PCM format. This cuts the file size of the recording in half.
