"VMware Workstation 2.0 is exceptionally intuitive to
load and run. The instructions on the Web site are implicit and
detailed. Along with the instruction is a notice that there is no
support available for the evaluation version.
I downloaded both the tarball and the RPM to see which was
easier to install. I had no problems with either one from the
command line. Red Hat has a little work to do on the installation
of RPMs from the GUI, however. To get the program, I had to enter
my vitals and receive the key. This wasn?t a key, however; it was a
license that I had to put in my root folder. (Now there?s one way
to reduce the size of the download.) After I ran the ./Install, the
setup script took over.
This setup script takes the mystery out of configuration. It
asks whether you want to configure the host file system to allow
the virtual machines to access the host file system. It will set up
host-only networking, which is needed to access the host file
system. The setup script will also probe for unused private subnets
and probe the kernel for you. The script is very verbose. It comes
back to tell you that it found a perfect match when looking for
dependent modules. Then it probes Samba. It suggests that you look
at the Samba configuration file to make sure it doesn't conflict
with any real-world setups."
