"...Linux offers studios cost savings and flexibility,
since the operating system is basically free, its inner workings
accessible and its functions infinitely customizable.
"Off-the-shelf software only gets you a certain part of the
way," said Mark Sylvester, co-founder of Alias/Wavefront, which
makes Maya animation and visual effect software and is porting the
program to Linux.
"If you want to push the envelope, which requires innovation for
a certain product, that requires a robust architecture people can
program in," Sylvester said."
