"Packet writing is an interesting application of cd-rw
drives but until the process can become more user-friendly and the
tools can become more feedback-oriented, we'll have to wait for
some time. No one wants to waste a pack of cd-rw discs on something
that won't even tell them what is going on. They just sit there and
wait and wait and finally, it spits out an error message.
And of course, the packet writing capability that Linux has
right now is not really anything to put on a production system
anyway. It is just something to play with and see how far you can
However, maybe the hardware I used isn't supported very well by
the packet writing programs that were used. I was under the
impression that they would be, at least in the case of the Philips
drive since it is brand new. Unfortunately, I am not very impressed
with UDF packet writing capability on the hardare I tested under
Linux. Hopefully that will change in the future, if I get the
opportunity to test it again."
