"The 800-pound database gorilla Oracle will need to shed a few pounds in order to stay ahead of both proprietary and open-source rivals. One open-source offering, Great Bridge PostgreSQL, shows much promise in being able to hold and leverage a company's greatest assets--its data.

If your business has hefty database requirements, it's hard to imagine an open-source option that's a true alternative to the established commercial database engines. Great Bridge, however, brings software, service and support together in a product that can be safely considered for many smaller organizations or apps.

Concerns regarding production support often prevent enterprise customers from considering open-source solutions. Great Bridge seeks to mitigate this concern by offering several levels of support, from standard to premium, at prices from $495 to $12,500."
