"Where office suites are concerned, Applixware Office is one of the mainstays of the UNIX world. Additionally, it is one of the oldest office suites available for Linux. It is also one of only two office suites (the other being WordPerfect Office) that require you to purchase the suite outright in order to use it. Thankfully, they do offer a 30 day demo with some distributions. Applixware is distributed by VistaSource Inc., a spin-off from Applix Inc.

Applixware Office consists of several applications: Words, Spreadsheets, Presents, Mail, Data, SHELF/Builder, Graphics, Bitmap Editor, and HTML Author. Pretty much everything you would want in an office suite is included, with the notable exception of a Personal Information Manager.

...I like Applixware Office 5.0. Despite some quirks, it really is a smart and efficient office suite. Unlike other commercial Linux-based office suites it's lightning fast. This is due to the fact that Applixware is native to Linux, the others are not. I would recommend it over other suites mainly because it will do just about anything the average user would want without tying up your system's resources. The only real prejudice against Applixware Office 5.0 is the price. However, when compared to its Windows counterparts, it isn't that bad."
