"Visiting Australia this week was Dan Frye, Director of IBM's Linux Technology Centre . Immediately obvious from our chat was the fact that Linux needs to compete in new markets rather than try and challenge incumbent ones such as the desktop. Interestingly, a small team of kernel hackers in Canberra is playing an important part in that mission.

IBM contributes to the Open Source operating system via its Linux Technology Centre (LTC). The rationale behind the 200 strong programmer force is that the faster Linux improves the greater the opportunity for IBM's hardware, application software and services divisions is.

The way Frye and IBM have built the LTC has been through opportunism. Employees of the LTC were hand-picked from the creme de la creme of the open source development community, creating a geographical curiosity whereby the LTC has its head office in Beaverton, Oregon and international presence in cities like Hifa, Israel."
