"CT: We're talking about both StarOffice and OpenOffice. Could you elaborate a bit on the relation between the two?

"Rogers: Absolutely. We want the community to focus on OpenOffice.org. We started OpenOffice with the development version of 6.0, and it's been tremendously successful from a community development standpoint. There are many people actively working with it, and the number of downloads of the source is well over a million. I think that OpenOffice.org is primarily perceived as the community development site, but OpenOffice.org is also a binary version of a fully functional office suite, that has had even more downloads than the source.

"One of the things that is least well understood -- that you seem to understand well -- is that this isn't a one-time drop at OpenOffice.org. We're committed to the site and the synchronicity between future OpenOffice.org and StarOffice releases. Our developers develop directly into the OpenOffice.org code base. Then when we build StarOffice, we take that base from OpenOffice and add things to it..."
