"Germany is on the verge of giving IBM a major public sector computer contract - and dealing a blow to software giant Microsoft in the process.

"According to the Wall Street Journal, IBM will shortly announce a deal which will offer German government offices deep discounts on computer systems based on Linux, rather than Microsoft's near-ubiquitous Windows operating system.

"The Journal said it had a copy of the statement prepared for release on Monday..."
